Divorce Magazine’s owner Martha Chan has been featured in a news story about an unusual new trend that’s making its way across North America and other parts of the world: divorce parties.
The news story, which aired on Toronto’s Global TV on April 12, explored how more people are choosing to celebrate their new single status with a happy gathering, complete with cakes, balloons, friends and festivities, instead of enduring the sombre and solitary experience that typically marks life after divorce.
“By having a divorce party, people tell their friends and family: I’m ok, you can talk to me about it,” commented Chan. “Divorce parties are really about moving forward, and not about trashing an ex.”
Chan also noted that some divorce parties, such as the large gathering hosted by Charles and Bonnie Bronfman last year to announce their separation, are joint affairs that help an ex-couple’s mutual friends avoid the awkward, and sometimes agonizing, obligation to choose sides.
“Divorce is an ending, but it’s also a time of renewal,” added Chan. “Divorce parties, or freedom parties as they’re sometimes called, help individuals, couples, families and friends end one chapter in their lives, and prepare to write a new one. Considering that for most people divorce is emotionally challenging, divorce parties can be cathartic. Divorce parties are not for everyone who goes through a divorce, much like not every wedding couple has an engagement or shower.”
